Vaduj: Unidentified thieves broke into two shops and two houses in Vaduj, the headquarters of Khatav taluka, around midnight, taking a mangalsutra worth about ₹35,000, ₹5,000 in cash and two mobile phones. With thefts on a second straight day, residents and traders are worried.

The shutter of a grocery shop on the Vaduj-Karad road was prised open at about 1 am and ₹5,000 in cash and a phone were stolen. The shop's CCTV camera captured four suspects. There was also an attempted theft at a nearby stationery shop. A mangalsutra was stolen from a locked house near the main market, and the locked home of a migrant worker in the grain market area was broken into and ransacked.

Two days earlier, six or seven armed men had tried to rob the residence of the market committee's deputy chairman in the early hours, and the week before that a bank ATM at Kuroli Phata was broken open and lakhs of rupees stolen.

The string of incidents has raised questions about police patrolling, and residents are demanding more night patrols and active beat officers for the town.
