Dongarkada: Thieves broke open the donation boxes at the Swayambhu Shri Jatashankar temple here after midnight on October 9 and made off with the money. They also took the digital video recorder (DVR) of the temple's CCTV system; it is the second time the recorder has been stolen.

The Jatashankar temple is revered by thousands of devotees in the region, and the government has recognised it as a 'C' class tourist site. Most devotees make anonymous offerings. Every month the trustees deposit the cash and metal items collected from the donation boxes in the temple's bank account, and the fund pays for religious events, weddings and help during natural disasters.

This is not the first time the boxes have been broken. They have been broken open three or four times before, and the thieves were never traced despite investigations with dog squads and fingerprint experts. There is talk in the area that the Akhada Balapur police will catch them this time. The trustees have gone to the police outpost to file a complaint, and further action is under way.
