Nevasa: A man was attacked with a sword, an axe, a sickle, a knife and wooden sticks and then shot in the back with a country-made pistol at Nagphani in the Sainathnagar area near Nevasa town early on Saturday, October 10, by people who suspected him of being a police informer. Doctors have described his condition as critical, said inspector Pratap Darade of the Nevasa police station.

According to the complaint, about ten people surrounded the man while he and his family were sleeping outside their house, asked whether he was a police informer passing on information about them, threatened to kill him and attacked him. Women and other relatives who stepped in to save him were also beaten, and two of them were injured. The attackers fled after threatening to shoot others like him.

The injured man was taken first to Nevasa Phata and then to a private hospital in Ahilyanagar city. A case has been registered against ten people on the complaint of a woman from the family, and police have detained five suspects from different places.

Police said the complainant, the injured man and the accused are related. The accused live near Devgad in Nevasa taluka. A murder case against them is already registered at the Shevgaon police station, in which they had been granted bail. The two groups have clashed before, and complaints about those disputes are on record with the Nevasa police.

Superintendent of police Mummaka Sudarshan visited the spot and gave instructions for the investigation. Assistant inspector Amol Pawar is investigating further.
