Daryapur: Police have invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against a five-member gang that robbed a jewellery shop in the town. A proposal sent by Daryapur police to superintendent of police Niketan Kadam has been approved.

The gang robbed the shop of valuable gold and silver ornaments at weapon-point on August 1. The five suspects are residents of Akot, Khamgaon and Satara. The local crime branch, which carried out a parallel investigation, had arrested three of them and recovered the stolen goods.

After the robbery, police examined the gang's record and found serious cases registered against its members in several districts, some committed individually and most together with other members. The investigation showed that for the past ten years the gang had been engaged in organised crime using violence, threats, coercion or other unlawful means to establish dominance and make money, which led to the MCOCA proposal.
