Over the past two days, word has spread that ‘all schools in the state’ will have summer vacation from 3 May to 14 June 2027. Those dates do appear in an official circular, but it was issued by the Pune Zilla Parishad’s secondary education department for recognised private secondary schools in Pune district. As of Friday, 23 October, we could not find any circular from the education commissionerate, the directorates of education or SCERT fixing the 2026-27 second term or the 2027 summer break for the whole state. Your children’s holidays will therefore depend on your zilla parishad’s circular and your school’s notice.

Summer vacation 2027: what district circulars say

  • Pune district (secondary, higher secondary and sainik schools): the second term ends on Saturday, 1 May 2027. Summer vacation runs from Monday, 3 May to Monday, 14 June 2027, and the 2027-28 year begins on Tuesday, 15 June. The span from 3 May to 14 June is 43 days; the circular’s table counts 36 of them as summer holidays. Teachers must attend the Maharashtra Day programme on 1 May.
  • Buldhana district (secondary and higher secondary): the second term runs from 16 November 2026 to 1 May 2027. Friday, 30 April is the last working day; on 1 May schools are to hoist the flag, declare results and announce the vacation to students. The circular does not say when schools reopen after the summer.
  • Beed and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (circulars from April 2026): no date for the 2027 summer break, but school hours change in the hot months. In Beed, schools will run from 8 am to 12.30 pm between 1 March and 30 April 2027; in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, from 7 am to 12.30 pm between 16 March and 30 April 2027.
  • Nanded, Parbhani, Latur, Jalna and Sangli: the October circulars cover the Diwali break (and, in Nanded and Parbhani, a count of the year’s working days) but say nothing about next summer.

The second term after Diwali: when schools reopen

  • Buldhana (secondary): Monday, 16 November; the break is from 6 to 14 November.
  • Pune and Sangli (secondary): the break runs from Thursday, 5 November to Wednesday, 18 November. Pune’s original plan had the second term starting on 16 November; the corrigendum of 8 October made a ‘partial change’ to the Diwali dates only and does not separately state the reopening day.
  • Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Friday, 20 November.
  • Jalna and Beed: Monday, 23 November.
  • Latur, Nanded and Parbhani: Wednesday, 25 November.

‘A 13-day Diwali break statewide’: the facts

The claim is wrong. The break from 2 to 14 November (13 days), with the second term from 16 November, comes from a May 2026 letter of the Pune Zilla Parishad’s Education Officer (Secondary), reference ZPPUNE/1057/2026-EDU(s). When it came out in May, Lokshahi reported it as Pune district’s schedule, and Agrowon’s report of 21 October also refers to schools ‘in the district’. Even so, between 21 and 23 October several websites presented the same details as applying to every school in the state. Pune itself changed its break to 5 to 18 November on 8 October, and across the nine districts whose circulars we have seen, the Diwali break ranges from 9 days (Buldhana) to 20 days (Latur).

What exists at state level?

The circulars of Pune, Buldhana, Beed, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Nanded and Parbhani cite a letter of 28 March 2026 from the directors of education in Pune (outward number 1776311). According to reports at the time, that letter dealt with this year’s summer break, that of 2026: state board schools off from 2 May to 14 June 2026 and reopening on 15 June, with schools of other boards left to decide for themselves. We have not been able to see the letter itself. We found no similar state-level letter yet for the 2027 summer break.

What parents should keep in mind

  • Wait for your school’s written notice before booking trips, camps or travel home for May-June 2027. Outside Pune district, there is no basis yet for assuming the 3 May to 14 June dates.
  • The Pune circular repeats the Secondary School Code rule that all holidays in the year together must not exceed 76 days and that schools must work at least 230 days. Working days in the circulars: 237 in Pune, Nanded and Parbhani; 239 in Beed and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar; 231 in Buldhana (secondary).
  • Schools that give extra holidays for festivals such as Ganeshotsav or Christmas can shorten the Diwali or summer break instead; in Pune this needs the education officer’s permission. Two schools in the same district may therefore have different dates.
  • We have not seen 2026-27 circulars for Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, Nagpur, Kolhapur and the other districts; parents there should ask the school directly. Schools of CBSE, ICSE and other boards may follow a different schedule.
