Dharur: A short circuit set a sugarcane field on fire at Bhopa in Dharur taluka on Saturday afternoon, October 10. About eight acres of cane belonging to four farmers was burnt, causing them heavy losses.
With the taluka in drought for lack of rain, the farmers had kept the cane alive with great effort using what water they had. The fire has destroyed not only their expected income but also fodder for their cattle, a double loss. The cost of planting, months of work and the hope of a year's income have gone up in smoke.
After the tahsil office was informed, circle officer Sopan Waghmare, talathi Savita Battewad and other revenue staff visited the spot, inspected the damage and reported it to senior officials. There is a demand that the loss assessments be completed quickly and the affected farmers given financial help under the rules without delay.
