Udgir: The cooperation department had received a complaint that a man in the Sai Nagar area of the city was lending money without a licence. Acting on it, a joint team of the department and the police raided and searched the premises on Friday, October 9, and took ledgers containing interest entries, various documents and copies of them for further inquiry.

The action was taken under Section 16 of the Maharashtra Money-Lending (Regulation) Act, 2014. The transactions will be examined in detail on the basis of the documents, and only after the inquiry will it be clear what they involved and whether the law was broken.

The drive was carried out under the guidance of collector Dr Bharat Bastewad and superintendent of police Amol Tambe and the supervision of divisional joint registrar Nanasaheb Chavan and district deputy registrar Vishnu Potangale. Cooperative officer (grade 2) V N Vibhute led the team. Udgir tehsildar Ram Borgaonkar and city police assisted, and staff of the government milk scheme acted as panch witnesses.

Udgir assistant registrar of cooperative societies M D Kachhave has urged anyone who knows of unlicensed moneylending in the taluka to complain in confidence to the district deputy registrar (moneylending) or the taluka assistant registrar's office, adding that complainants' names will be kept secret.
