Khamgaon: Khamgaon city police have arrested a 30-year-old man from Chitoda (Ambikapur) accused of trying to extort ₹10 lakh by posing as an officer of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and threatening money-laundering action.

A 61-year-old resident of Khamgaon filed a complaint at the Khamgaon city police station on October 9. According to the complaint, between 8.21 pm on September 29 and 9 pm on October 8, the accused, acting together with the holder of a mobile number, contacted the complainant's brother through WhatsApp calls. Claiming to be IB officers, they showed a fake identity card and sent a bogus notice over WhatsApp from the same number.

The brother was told that money-laundering action was about to be taken against him, and ₹10 lakh was demanded, the complaint says. After the case was registered, police investigated and arrested the accused. Police sub-inspector Kishor Barve is carrying out further investigation.
