Beware of fake e-challan messages and APK files, Wardha police warn
Fraudsters send links and QR codes in the name of traffic fines to empty bank accounts; call 1930 if cheated

Wardha: With a rise in cases of bank accounts being emptied through fake e-challans and suspicious APK files aimed at motorists, Wardha district police have asked residents to stay alert. Fraudsters send fake messages by SMS, WhatsApp or email alleging violations such as speeding, riding without a helmet or jumping a signal, and ask people to pay a fine.
The messages carry a fake link, QR code or APK file. If people open it in a hurry or out of fear and install the unknown app or try to pay, the fraudsters take control of the phone, steal bank details, UPI PINs and OTPs and withdraw money from the account, the police said.
Challan details should be checked only on the official government website or app, and APK files from unknown sources should never be installed, because government departments do not ask for fines by sending such files. PINs, passwords and OTPs should never be shared. Victims should keep the message, screenshots and transaction details, contact their bank to block the account and cards, and immediately call the national cyber helpline 1930 or file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in, the police said.
