Gondia: Recognising that patients with serious illnesses such as cancer, kidney disease and paralysis need emotional and psychological support as well as medicine, the Kunwar Tilak Singh (KTS) district general hospital here observed World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, Berar Times reported. The programme was held on the instructions of civil surgeon Dr Purushottam Patle and chaired by additional civil surgeon Dr Trupti Katre.

Palliative care is a vital service that keeps the lives of seriously ill patients bearable and dignified to the end, Dr Katre said, adding that the hospital's team is committed to giving such patients counselling and proper care along with pain relief.

Taking these services to patients at the rural and district levels is the health department's aim under the national palliative care programme, Dr Patle said in his message, adding that home-based care is being strengthened for patients who cannot come to hospital.
