Amravati: Angry parents, the school management committee and youth representatives in Waygaon locked the village's zilla parishad school on the morning of Saturday, October 10, protesting that the government and administration had ignored their demand to end a shortage of teachers. The protest has again put the spotlight on schooling in rural areas.
The Waygaon zilla parishad primary school has a healthy enrolment, but for many months it has not had enough teachers. With a handful of teachers handling all the classes, students' education and the quality of teaching are suffering, parents say.
The school management committee, parents and local representatives repeatedly submitted memorandums to senior education department officials and met them in person to get the vacancies filled, but each time they received only assurances and not a single new teacher was appointed, the protesters alleged. Parents asked what use assurances were while the children's schooling suffered.
