Sawantwadi: Licensed stall owners displaced by action taken by the Sawantwadi municipal council met tourism committee chairperson Mohini Madgaonkar to put their problems before her. Their families depend on the stalls for a living, they said, and they asked for an alternative arrangement.

The stall owners asked why action had been taken only against them when there were many other shops in the town, and pleaded for justice, saying their livelihoods were at stake.

Assuring them that no one would be treated unfairly, Madgaonkar said a meeting of the council president, vice-president, all committee chairpersons and councillors would be held soon to find a solution. The council is considering a dedicated 'khau galli' (food street) to give mobile stall holders and evening traders an alternative site, she said, adding that the idea had already been raised at a council meeting.

Those whose stalls are in the council's custody should apply formally to get them back, she said, and a way out would be found as soon as possible without causing them losses.
