The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced that water supply to the entire city will be shut all day on Saturday, 24 October. Major leaks on trunk pipelines will be plugged, new valves fitted and new connections made across all six of the city’s divisions on the same day. Supply on the morning of Sunday, 25 October will come at low pressure, the NMC’s public health engineering (water supply) department said in a public notice dated 22 October.

At a glance

  • Supply off: Saturday, 24 October, the whole day, across Nashik city
  • Duration of work: an estimated 12 to 18 hours, according to the NMC; roughly 12 hours for the work in each division
  • The notice does not give an exact time for when supply stops or resumes
  • Sunday, 25 October: morning supply at low pressure
  • Tankers: the NMC notice makes no mention of tanker arrangements

Work planned in each division

  • Nashik East: a leak on a 300 mm main along the service road near Lekhanagar (ward 30); linking the Kalanagar water tank’s distribution line to the existing network
  • Nashik West: leaks at the Ramrajya water tank and beside the PTC wall on Trimbak Road; a new valve at the GPO water tank; a T-joint on the pipeline near the B. D. Bhalekar ground
  • Nashik Road: leaks near Patil Garage, at Maheshnagar, Handore Mala (Wadner Road), Wadner Chaupuli (Deolali Camp Road) and Deolali Gaon; tracing the cause of contaminated supply opposite Regimental Plaza; repairs to valves and lines at the Muktidham, Vihitgaon and Jai Bhavani tanks and at Rajwada in Deolali Gaon
  • Panchavati: repair of the Mhasrul–Borgad rising main over the canal (ward 4); cross-connections on the main distribution line at Amrutdham Chaupuli and on the new rising main at Shaktinagar (ward 3)
  • Satpur: leaks on two 500 mm lines near Sant Kabir Nagar and the Anandi Angan jogging track, and on a 1,200 mm line near Sirin Meadows
  • Navin Nashik (CIDCO): an 800 mm valve at Pathardi Phata water tank no. 4 and a 900 mm main near the Ambad Gaon crematorium (ward 27); a 700 mm gravity main at Mauli Lawns, DGP Nagar (ward 28); a new 600 mm valve at the Vilholi water treatment plant

What about the Gangapur pipeline test?

On 15 October, Pudhari reported that the NMC planned to run the first test of about 8.5 km of the new direct pipeline from Gangapur dam to the Bara Bangla water treatment plant on 24 October. The NMC’s notice of 22 October, however, lists only leak, valve and connection work and does not mention that test.

The NMC’s appeal

The water supply department has asked residents to store as much water as they will need for Saturday, use it sparingly and cooperate while the work is carried out. Because pressure will be low on Sunday morning, some areas may face difficulty getting water, the department added.

How to prepare at home (our general advice)

  • Fill drinking and household water on Friday night, and check that your overhead tank is full.
  • Sunday morning’s supply will also be at low pressure, so plan for your stock to last until Sunday afternoon.
  • Finish water-heavy chores such as laundry or washing the car on Friday, or put them off until Monday.
  • If your building has an underground sump and pump, make sure the pump doesn’t run dry once the sump empties.
  • The first water after repairs may be muddy; filter and boil it before drinking.
  • If you’re unsure when water will reach your area, check with your NMC divisional office.
