Himayatnagar: A 61-year-old former sarpanch of Mangrul in the taluka, who was also a director of the village's multipurpose cooperative society and a progressive farmer, was electrocuted in his field on Friday evening, October 9. He had gone to water his sugarcane crop.

He went to the field at about 5 pm as usual, parked his motorcycle on the bund, changed his clothes and headed into the cane. There he came into contact with a power line that had snapped and fallen in the field, and the shock killed him on the spot. Police inspector Laxman Kendre and his colleagues reached the spot and drew up a panchnama.

He was also active in social work, and his death has saddened Mangrul and the surrounding area. He was cremated at Mangrul on Saturday, October 10, and former MLA Madhavrao Patil Jawalgaonkar visited the family to offer condolences. He is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.
