Buldhana: Mindful of farmers hit by drought, the Nabhik community in Buldhana city has cancelled this year's evening procession marking the birth anniversary of Veerratna Jivaji Mahale. Community members have decided to deposit the roughly ₹51,000 the procession would have cost in the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to help farmers.

The anniversary of Jivaji Mahale, known as a loyal bodyguard of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was observed in the city on October 9 with a two-wheeler rally in the morning, followed by a tribute programme at the site of the community's planned hall. The Veerratna Jivaji Mahale public jayanti festival committee and community members approved the decision unanimously.

A procession is taken out every year for the anniversary, but with farmers suffering from drought this year, the community decided to skip it and give the money to help them, said Damodarkaka Bidwe of the community. Standing by farmers in a crisis is the community's responsibility, he said.
