Bhandara: Eight accident-prone spots, or black spots, on national and state highways in Bhandara district saw 55 serious accidents between 2023 and 2025 that killed 23 people, according to figures from the district traffic police control room, Navbharat reported. Some stretches of National Highway 53 in particular keep recording crashes.

On NH-53, Kardha Chowk saw 16 accidents and three deaths over the three years, and Bhalewada 15 accidents and five deaths. In the Sakoli police station area, the Shivnibandh road near the fish centre and the lake recorded nine accidents and five deaths, while the stretch from Kumbhli village to the zilla parishad school saw four accidents and four deaths.

The Manegaon road in Lakhani limits recorded six accidents and three deaths, Kharbi Naka in Jawaharnagar three accidents and two deaths, and Kawadsi and Pipri Phata two accidents and one death. The Mehgaon bus stand turn on State Highway 271 recorded no accidents or deaths in the period.

Clear signboards, speed-limit boards, lane markings, reflectors, cat-eyes, rumble strips and sturdy crash barriers are needed at dangerous bends and sensitive spots, the report said. District traffic police inspector Krishnakumar Tiwari said the black spots are inspected regularly and safety measures are being given priority in coordination with other departments. He urged drivers to keep to speed limits, two-wheeler riders to wear helmets and car occupants to use seat belts.
