Satara: Workers at the Kisan Veer Satara Co-operative Sugar Factory have called off a three-day agitation over pending wages and other demands. A meeting between the management and workers' representatives at the factory, held at the initiative of the factory's chairman, relief and rehabilitation minister Makrand Patil, produced a settlement.

The management said it would pay a month's salary before Dussehra and two months' salaries at Diwali, and would try to pay wages regularly and on time after that. Patil promised the workers a sweet Diwali this year. The decision is expected to ease the hardship of workers struggling because of unpaid wages.

Workers' representatives thanked the chairman and the management for their positive approach and promised to work flat out to make the coming crushing season a success.

The factory's vice-chairman Pramod Shinde and members of the board of directors attended the meeting.
