Amravati: An administrator took charge of the Amravati District Central Cooperative Bank, regarded as the backbone of the district's cooperative sector, from Saturday, October 10. Divisional joint registrar (audit) Shrinivas Pandhare has been appointed administrator by divisional joint registrar (cooperative societies) Gautam Wardhan.

The term of the bank's board of directors ended on October 4, prompting speculation over whether an administrator would be named or the board given an extension. The ruling directors had moved the high court for an extension, but their petition was rejected, making an administrator certain. The appointment ends the tenure of the board led by MLA Bachchu Kadu and vice-president Abhijit Dhepe.

No date has been set for the bank's election, but aspirants are already sounding out support and panels are being put together. The Kadu-Dhepe group has long been at odds with a group comprising Bablu Deshmukh, MP Balwant Wankhade and former MLA Prof Virendra Jagtap, and cooperative-sector politics is expected to heat up in the coming days.
