Mumbai: Aaditya Thackeray, Yuva Sena chief and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader, has alleged that 24,000 bogus voters have been found in Worli and that the names of about five lakh Mumbai voters are absent from the rolls. He questioned the special intensive revision (SIR) of the rolls and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Presenting figures at a press conference, Thackeray said thousands of voters had been registered at addresses that turned out to be rooms of ten feet by ten feet. Comparing data the Election Commission released on different dates, he estimated that about five lakh voters in Mumbai, and about ten lakh across Maharashtra, could be affected. He asked how the errors survived even though officials had received a list of 17 lakh people before the municipal elections.
He also questioned Bhiwandi's figures. In 2024 the constituency had 3,73,659 registered voters and 1,91,691 of them voted, he said, yet data after the revision referred to 1,91,643 voters. In Mahim, he said, about 900 voters had not been mapped and had received notices asking them to prove their citizenship, and some living people had been recorded as dead.
Accusing the authorities of putting voters' rights at risk, Thackeray demanded accountability from the Election Commission and predicted a change of government in the state before 2029. The allegations are Thackeray's own and have not been independently verified; checking them is a matter for the Election Commission and the authorities concerned.
