Vasai: The Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation carried out a major drive against banned plastic in the Dhumal Nagar area of Vasai East on Friday. A civic team inspected two commercial establishments, seized nearly three tonnes of prohibited plastic and fined the traders under the rules.

Deputy commissioner Archana Dive, additional commissioner Sanjay Herwade and municipal commissioner Prithviraj B.P. oversaw the drive. A 17-member team that included health inspectors was led by chief health inspector Avinash Gunjalkar, who is also the officer of ward committee No. 9.

During the inspection, one trader objected to the action, fetched a bottle of petrol, poured it inside his shop and threatened to set it on fire. Civic staff quickly restrained him and informed the local police. The incident caused tension in the area for some time.

Officials said the campaign against banned plastic would carry on with the same vigour. Violators would face strict legal action, they warned, and anyone trying to stall official work with threats would be booked under criminal law.
