Umarkhed: Umarkhed police have issued prohibitory orders for the area around Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk in the town. Issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, the orders are in force from 6 am on October 11 to 6 am on October 22.

Various organisations and social activists had held agitations, hunger strikes and demonstrations demanding the removal of a petrol pump in the chowk area. The restrictions have been imposed as a precaution so that the issue does not disturb the peace during Navratri, the police station's press note said.

Under the orders, gatherings of five or more people are banned in the area, and lathis, sticks, swords, guns, knives or any object that can cause bodily harm may not be carried. Sloganeering, demonstrations, sit-ins, hunger strikes, agitations and putting up banners are also prohibited.

Police and other security personnel on duty, hearses and wedding processions held with prior permission are exempt, as are people given exemptions by authorised officers.
