Thane: Thane has topped Indian Railways' list of the country's 100 busiest stations by passenger footfall. According to the 2023-24 figures, about 9.3 crore passengers used the station during the year.

Kalyan Junction is second with 8.3 crore passengers. Five stations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region feature in the top ten: Thane, Kalyan, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Panvel and Dadar. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is fourth with about 5.1 crore passengers, while New Delhi is seventh with 3.9 crore.

The figures show how heavily people in the region depend on the suburban railway. A new suburban station has been proposed between Thane and Mulund to ease overcrowding at Thane, and it is expected to take some of the pressure off the station once it opens.
