Nandurbar: Large crowds of devotees visited the Shani temple at Shanimandal in Nandurbar taluka, known across Khandesh, on Saturday, October 10, for Shani Amavasya. This year Sarvapitri Amavasya and Shani Amavasya fell on the same day, and queues formed from the morning.

The temple is believed to free devotees from the 'sade sati' period of Saturn's influence, and a fair is held there on Shani Amavasya, when devotees offer oil and coconuts. The temple is held in special regard because the legend of King Vikram and Lord Shani is believed to have taken place there.

The temple grounds took on the look of a fair, with crowds at stalls selling puja items, coconuts, oil and garlands. The Shaneshwar Trust made arrangements for devotees, and villagers served a community meal of pithla-bhakri and rice to thousands of people.

The temple has been renovated and has 'B' class pilgrimage status. With the number of devotees growing steadily, more facilities are planned, trust president Arun Patil said.
