Sangli: To prevent traffic jams in the market during the Navratri and Diwali shopping season, the Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad municipal corporation's encroachment department carried out a drive around Balaji Chowk. Six sheds built in front of shops were removed to clear the road, along with stand boards and goods placed on the roadside for sale.

Balaji Chowk, the road to the old vegetable market, Datta Maruti Road and the main road in Ganpati Peth get very crowded at festival time. The corporation had already told traders to remove encroachments that block traffic, and the action followed.

Work is under way to remove sheds, pandals and other obstructions in front of shops from Balaji Chowk to Datta Maruti Road and on the Ganpati Peth main road. After the administration's appeal, some traders have begun taking down their sheds on their own.

The corporation said the drive would continue so that people can move about safely, pedestrians have room to walk, and traffic jams are avoided during the festivals.
