Ratnagiri: Instead of the first hint of winter, residents of Ratnagiri are facing harsh October heat. The district recorded a maximum temperature of 37 degrees Celsius on Saturday, and even the minimum stayed at 25 degrees, before the first fortnight of the month was out.

After the retreating monsoon, the strong sun has pushed up humidity and sultriness. The heat is felt from the morning, and the harsh afternoon sun is leaving people drained, so roads are largely empty in the afternoons.

The gap between day and night temperatures and the rising heat increase the risk of heatstroke, dehydration, colds and fever, health experts said. They advised people to avoid going out in the afternoon sun and to drink plenty of water, lemon water or buttermilk.
