Nagpur: A leopard chasing a herd of wild boars fell into a deep, water-filled farm well along with four of the boars at Tishti (Bu.) village in the Kalameshwar forest range on Friday, October 9. The incident is estimated to have happened at about 11.30 am. The leopard's roars and the noise from the well drew villagers' attention, and they alerted the forest department immediately.

Staff of the Kalameshwar range reached the spot, and a special rescue team from the Nagpur territorial forest division's Transit Treatment Centre (TTC) arrived at about 2.30 pm. Police were also called as a crowd gathered. Led by Dr Priyal Chauragade and guided by TTC coordinator Kundan Hate, the team pulled the leopard out safely after several hours.

The leopard fractured a leg in the fall and was shifted to the Transit Treatment Centre in Nagpur for treatment. One boar was pulled out unharmed and released into the forest, while three drowned and were buried by the forest department as per rules. Kalameshwar range forest officer P L Sathwane and other forest staff took part in the rescue. The incident again showed how dangerous open wells on farms can be for wildlife, Loksatta noted.
