Kopargaon: The Kopargaon municipal council has changed the town's water supply schedule because the next water release from the irrigation department will come late owing to drought-like conditions. From October 9 the town will get water once every six days, council official Ajit Nikat said. Officials of the Nashik irrigation department had told the council the release would be delayed.

Of the council's five storage tanks at Yesgaon, which supply the town, the first currently holds 5.5 feet of water, the second 4 feet, the third 6 feet, the fourth 10 feet and the fifth 15 feet, a combined level of 40.5 feet, said Swapnil Jadhav, a clerk in the water supply department.

Making this stock last until the next release is now the council's challenge, and the rising heat is likely to shrink it further through evaporation.

The council has asked residents not to leave taps running, to use less water for bathing, not to waste water washing vehicles and to water gardens sparingly. It has also asked them to draw on nearby borewells as needed. The longer gap between supplies has come just ahead of the festive season, and residents have voiced their unhappiness.
