Buldhana: The Maharashtra State Newspaper Vendors' Association held an agitation across the state demanding, among other things, that the separate welfare board approved by the government for newspaper vendors be made operational immediately. As part of it, the Buldhana district newspaper vendors' association marched to the collector's office on October 9.

The march set out from Jaystambh Chowk in the city and reached the collectorate, with hundreds of vendors from across the district raising slogans. Office-bearers of the association submitted a detailed memorandum of their demands to the collector.

The association has been fighting for vendors' rights and for a welfare corporation for 16 to 17 years. The state cabinet decided to set up the corporation, but it has not actually been implemented despite the approval, the memorandum says. The association wants it made operational quickly to give vendors relief.

District president Rajendra Tikar, district secretary Gajanan Sarkate, vice-president Sanjay Swami, treasurer Madhav Deshmukh, divisional secretary Prakash Unhale and publicity chief Santosh Gadekar took part, along with members of the executive and vendors from the district.
