Jalna: The Jalna Municipal Corporation has taken a strict line to keep the city's water supply running smoothly in drought-like conditions and make sure available water is used carefully. Anyone found wasting water, with a leaking tap or pipe, or with an unauthorised connection will be fined ₹5,000 the first time, ₹10,000 the second time and ₹25,000 the third time, with a criminal case also proposed for a third offence.

Residents have been asked to repair leaks in household connections, taps, faucets and internal pipes by October 15. They should turn taps off as soon as they have filled water, fit proper faucets on every tap and not let water run off into roads or drains, the corporation says.

Residents must not use electric motors or pumps to draw water directly from the corporation's pipeline, should get unauthorised connections regularised and must not tamper with the pipeline without permission. Using drinking water to wash roads, house fronts or vehicles is also banned.

Using available water carefully is every citizen's responsibility, and those who break the rules will face penalties as provided, said municipal commissioner Anjali Sharma, who asked residents to cooperate with the water supply system.
