Jalgaon: Administrative work has picked up pace on the proposed Jalgaon-Jalna railway line, which will link Marathwada and north Maharashtra over a shorter distance. Land acquisition and the physical survey of land are in their final stage, and preparations for the next steps are under way.

The line will be about 174 km long, with roughly 140 km in Jalna district and 34 km in Jalgaon district. Rail travel between the two regions now involves a long detour, and the new line should save time and money.

The Jalna line will branch off at Bhadli station on the Jalgaon-Bhusawal route. Even as work on a fifth line between Jalgaon and Bhusawal continues, preparations have begun for a sixth line of about 9 km between Jalgaon and Bhadli for the Jalna route.

The line is expected to help move farm produce from Jalgaon, known for its bananas, along with cotton and Jalna's industrial products. After the land survey and acquisition, technical approval and funding will have to follow, and both districts are watching for when construction actually begins.
