Mumbai: A major obstacle to the Goregaon–Mulund Link Road (GMLR), meant to ease travel between Mumbai's western and eastern suburbs, has been removed. On Friday the municipal corporation's S ward demolished about 180 structures standing in the road's path at Khindipada–Sonapur in Bhandup West, leaving the alignment within the ward almost entirely clear.

The link road is 12.20 km long and is being built in four phases that include a road, an underground tunnel and a flyover. Debris from the demolished structures is now being removed, after which the land will be handed over for road widening and further work. The corporation has rehoused 108 eligible residents affected by the project.

The drive was carried out under the guidance of the deputy municipal commissioner for Zone 6 and led by the S ward assistant commissioner. More than 30 civic engineers and 100 workers took part, with four poclain excavators, four JCB loaders and ten dumpers. Ninety police personnel were deployed to maintain order.
