Manwat: Five or six pipes of the main line of the town's water supply scheme burst while fibre-optic cable was being laid for a telecom company, and the town's water supply has been disrupted for the past six days. Residents are facing a shortage just as preparations for Navratri are under way.

The main pipeline was badly damaged when it was hit by a JCB while cable was being laid on the night of Sunday, October 4. A leak was first seen at only one spot, but once repairs began, pipes were found to have burst at other places too, complicating the work. A team of engineers, technicians and workers has spent four days and nights tracing leaks and fitting new pipes under the guidance of chief officer Komal Saware, and technical problems have made it take longer than expected.

The company had obtained the required permission before starting work, but the pipeline was badly damaged in the process, Saware said, adding that supply would be restored soon. Deputy council president Dr Ankush Lad said efforts were under way to get water to all parts of the town within the next two days.
