Mumbai: Central Railway's Mumbai division removed 1.68 lakh kg of garbage, silt and waste from beside the tracks between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Dadar in a single clean-up, the railway said on Saturday. The muck was carried away on its special train known as the "Swachhata Rath".

The drive was carried out from 11 am to 3 pm during the mega block on Sunday, October 4, and focused on spots where rubbish collects near CSMT, Masjid, Parel, Dadar and Matunga stations. A total of 881 people took part, among them trackmen, sanitation and housekeeping staff, supervisors and contract workers. The waste was bagged, loaded on to the special EMU and sent to authorised facilities for processing and disposal.

Silt and garbage along the line choke the drains that carry water away from the tracks, adding to waterlogging in the monsoon. Between April and September 2026 the division cleared 1.91 lakh cubic metres of silt and waste, the railway said. The work is part of the "Swachhata Pakhwada" and "Special Campaign 6.0" drives.

Central Railway chief spokesperson Swapnil Nila said the railway was committed to keeping its premises clean but needed the public's cooperation, and appealed to commuters and citizens not to throw garbage on the tracks.
