Mumbai: Work on the Byculla flyover, which the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is building to ease traffic congestion around J.J. in Byculla, has not picked up the expected pace. About 30% of the bridge is reported to be complete, and because the construction is technically demanding, its May 2028 completion deadline is expected to slip by five to six months.

The flyover will connect the Sitaram Silam flyover (Y bridge) in Byculla with the J.J. flyover, and work is under way at the junction of J.J. Marg and the Sabu Siddique Polytechnic. Its main cable-stayed section will be about 230 metres long and its viaduct 312 metres, with two lanes in each direction. It is being built of reinforced concrete and structural stainless steel.

The civic body's additional commissioner Abhijit Bangar recently inspected the project and ordered the work speeded up, but the nature of the construction makes the deadline hard to meet, according to the report.

Once complete, the bridge is expected to ease congestion at junctions on Sir J.J. Road and in Byculla, Nagpada and Mazgaon, one of South Mumbai's busiest traffic belts, cutting travel time and fuel use.
